RideControl App – Komoot Data Usage Statement

This statement explains how relevant data is collected, used, stored, and deleted when you link your Komoot account to the RideControl App (the “App”).

This statement covers the processing of your Komoot personal data in the App. Giant does not have access to your Komoot account, route or navigation data, and this statement describes only the processing that takes place within the App itself. Komoot is separately responsible, as controller, for its own processing of your personal data through the Komoot service. Please refer to Komoot's own privacy policy for information on that processing. For how Giant handles your other personal data in the RideControl App, please see our general RideControl App Privacy Notice

1. Information RideControl Obtains from Komoot
After you provide your consent by authorising the linking of your Komoot account, the App may obtain the following information from Komoot:

  • Your Komoot username.
  • Komoot connection credentials that keep your account linked to the App.
  • Your public and planned Komoot routes.
  • Route ID, name, distance, estimated time, and elevation gain information.
  • Route preview image URL.
  • Route coordinates, directional instructions, road names, turn types, and other navigation information.

Certain information may be transmitted to the App as part of Komoot’s response but may not be displayed or retained in the App. For example, route dates, sport types, certain elevation data, and coordinate timestamp information are not used in RideControl’s navigation interface.

2. How Your Komoot Information Is Transmitted, Used, and Displayed
The App connects directly from your mobile phone to Komoot’s authorisation and service endpoints. Your Komoot data is not routed through or stored on Giant servers or other Giant cloud storage as part of this connection.

The App uses your Komoot information to:

  • Display the routes (tours) you have planned in Komoot.
  • Display route (tour) names, distances, estimated times, elevation gain, and preview images.
  • Download the complete route (tour) you select.
  • Convert Komoot coordinates and directional instructions into the App’s navigation format.
  • Display the route, starting point, and destination on the map.
  • Provide turn-by-turn prompts, road names, distances, and arrival detection.
  • Determine your distance from the starting point of the route (tour).

If you choose to use the Google Maps App to navigate to the starting point of the selected Komoot route, the App provides only the starting-point coordinates to the Google Maps App and does not provide the complete route information.

Currently, the App’s Komoot functionality only reads the routes (tours) you have planned in Komoot. It does not provide a function for uploading the following RideControl App data to Komoot:

  • Activity records and historical ride data.
  • Actual riding location tracks.
  • Ride statistics.
  • Files in GPX, CSV, FIT, or other related formats.

3. How Information Is Stored
The following data is stored in the RideControl App’s dedicated storage area on your device and is protected by the native operating system’s data-protection mechanisms:

  • Your Komoot username.
  • Komoot connection credentials (an access token and a refresh token, with their expiry) used to keep your account linked.

The Komoot route list and complete route details are primarily retrieved in real time when used and are retained in the App cache on your device. They are not cleared automatically at the end of an App session. They remain until you disconnect your Komoot account, uninstall the App, or clear the RideControl App data on your device.

When you select a route and start navigation, the App stores navigation data in the mobile phone’s local database, including:

  • Route name.
  • Distance and estimated time.
  • The complete list of route coordinate points.
  • Coordinates, road instructions, and turn information for each navigation step.

Route preview images may also be retained in the App’s image cache. This navigation data and these cached images are retained on the same basis and remain until you disconnect your Komoot account, uninstall the App, or clear the RideControl App data on your device.

In addition, if you enable device backup or device transfer features, the operating system may back up the App’s personal settings and local database to your personal account, such as Google or iCloud, and may transfer them to another device. Such backups are not created or managed by Giant’s backend systems.

4. Access by Giant or Third Parties
During normal use of the Komoot functionality, Komoot account data and route information are not transmitted to or stored in Giant servers or other Giant cloud storage. The App also currently has no function for uploading your Komoot username, connection credentials, or complete routes to Giant management systems.

However, the following services may process certain information:

  • Komoot (acting as an independent controller): Receives authorisation requests, route lists, and route details from the App.
  • Google Maps, provided by Google Ireland Limited for EEA and UK users and by Google LLC otherwise (each acting as an independent controller): When you actively choose to use the Google Maps App to navigate to a route’s starting point, the Google Maps App also receives the coordinates of that starting point.
  • Google Android Backup or iCloud Backup provided by Google and Apple respectively (each acting as an independent controller) if you enable backup, these services may back up connection information and saved navigation data. Giant does not create, manage or have access to these backups.

5. Data Handling After Disconnecting Your Komoot Account
Disconnecting your Komoot account withdraws your consent to this processing. You can do this at any time; withdrawal does not affect the lawfulness of processing carried out before you withdrew it.

After the account is successfully disconnected, the App will:

Notify Komoot to revoke the connection credentials.
Delete the Komoot connection credentials from the mobile phone.
Delete the saved Komoot username.
Stop retrieving your Komoot route information.
Delete the Komoot route and navigation data stored on your device.
If disconnection fails, the App displays an error, and the related connection data may remain so that the user can try again.

Disconnecting the account does not automatically delete backups previously created by Android or iOS. Such backups remain until you delete them yourself, disable backup for the App, or your device's operating system overwrites or removes older backups according to its own backup settings.
