Almost perfect conditions greeted athletes in Shepparton as they lined up for the 2022 running of one of Australia's favourite triathlon events, Challenge Shepparton. With an open water swim out of the way, Tim van Berkel worked his way towards the front on his Trinity Advanced Pro equipped with a CADEX Aero WheelSystem. Fellow Giant sponsored athlete Matt Burton briefly worked his way up to the front with Tim Berkel, before Tim managed to build a small lead. Tim posted the second fastest bike split of the day with Matt Burton posting the fastest, also riding a Trinity Advanced Pro.
Heading out onto the run, Tim van Berkel worked on extending his lead and finishing the race almost 4 minutes ahead of second place finisher Fraser Walsh, with Max Neumann in third position rounding out the podium. Fellow Giant athlete Matt Burton ultimately finished in fifth position. After the race Tim had this to say, "Today started off pretty rough with a bad swim for me but I got out on the bike and really got to work and took the lead by the turn around,” said van Berkel. “On the run I was in survival mode, it was really tough but the support was amazing out there. It’s great to be back, this is where it all started for me, I did my first race here 15 years ago and it’s so good to be back!”
Tim will now turn is attention to preparation for a full distance event at Ironman Australia in May. For full results from Challenge Shepparton, visit the event website here.
