In his first race of the season Giant Bicycles Australia sponsored triathlete Sam Appleton has opened his account by taking back to back wins at Ironman 70.3 in Geelong over the weekend. Athletes faced ideal conditions in this year’s edition after a wild, windy and wet event in 2017.

Sam went into the race as the hot favourite after not only his win at the same event last year, but also after winning a stack of other 70.3 distance events in 2017.

The race got off to a good start on the Geelong foreshore as Sam exited the water right towards the front of the pack. Heading out of T1 Sam put in super strong bike split of 2:05:28 equipped with his brand-new 2018 Trinity Advanced Pro Triathlon bike and Rivet TT helmet, a pack was starting to form after the first lap of the 90km bike course. Appo headed back into T2 shortly off the lead of the race but well in contention knowing that he has a strong run leg to back up his bike leg.

After a few kilometres into the run Sam managed to drop his rivals and kept a consistent gap to second place crossing the finish line first after 21.1kms of superb running in a total race time of 3:45:53, a minute and a half clear of the next competitor.

Sam will now head back into a solid training block before heading to the USA to take on Oceanside 70.3 in California in April. After this event Sam will once again turn his focus to the Ironman 70.3 World Championships in South Africa where he’ll be hoping for another strong performance after his 4th place last year.
