Matthews Wins, Grabs Overall Lead at Tour de Suisse!
Team Sunweb rider Michael Matthews won Stage 3 of the Tour de Suisse Monday, outsprinting world champion Peter Sagan to take the victory on his TCR Advanced SL team bike.
With the win, Matthews earned a 10-second bonus. And after his fourth-place finish in Saturday’s prologue, he jumped into the overall race lead, with 10-second advantage over teammate Tom Dumoulin, who is second in the general classification.
The 160km Stage 3 from Menziken to Bern featured three categorized climbs and a tough run-in to the finish. An early two-man break built a lead of more than 9 minutes, but Team Sunweb controlled the peloton with plans of launching Matthews on the punchy finish.
The last of the breakaway riders were caught with 13km to go, and Matthews had three teammates there to put him in position, supporting him on the hilly approach to the finish. Nikias Arndt finished off the leadout for Matthews, who attacked with 150 meters to go.
“I wasn’t climbing so well today, but it was good enough,” Matthews said. “I saw that I had a teammate there with Nikias Arndt and that gave me massive motivation because I knew he could do a really big pull. That made it perfect for me to do my sprint at the right time.”
Matthews will start Stage 4 wearing the yellow leader’s jersey, with his teammate and recent Giro d’Italia winner Dumoulin in second.
“It will be nice having the leader’s jersey tomorrow,” Matthews said. “The team won the Giro d’Italia so I guess they know how to ride on the front now.”
