A new event has been added to the off-road calendar in Australia this year with the inaugural Reef to Reef taking place over four days in stunning Far North Queensland. Based in the region around Cairns, the new event saw some slightly different formats offered when compared to other multi-day off-road events, the most unique being the pairs category.
Giant Australia Off-Road Team riders Brendan Johnston from Canberra and Jon Odams from Sydney joined forces for the first time as a pair to take on the first running of the Reef to Reef event. The first Stage was a Time Trial stage in which each pair set off at different times for an all out effort over a 20km journey around the Smithfield MTB park, the same venue that hosted the 2017 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships. Brendan and Jon worked well as a team setting the fastest time in the Time Trial stage by over 3 minutes from the next best team.
Stages 2 -4 saw longer distances raced ranging from 50kms all the way up to 63kms. The pairing worked well together on their Anthem Advanced Pro 29er race bikes extending their lead from 3 minutes after Stage 1 to over 10 minutes after Stage 4. Both riders raced smart and their bikes free from any mechanical incidents ensuring they stayed on top after 4 days of tough racing.
After this victory both riders will now gear up for the Giant sponsored Cape to Cape event in Western Australia later this year, an event that they'll take on as solo riders.
