The Otway Odyssey is one of the longest running mountain bike marathon events in Australia. The 16th edition of the event started from the popular mountain biking town of Forrest in Victoria. Starting at around 7:30am in the morning, a large field rolled out featuring a high calibre field of past winners, and the who's who of marathon mountain bike racing in Australia.
After a first dirt road section, the race began to split with the elite trio of Brendan Johnston (Giant Australia Off-Road Team), Cameron Ivory and Sam Fox building a lead on the rest of the field. It was eventually Johnston who broke clear to take victory on his Anthem Advanced Pro 29, finishing around 1 minute 30 seconds ahead of current National XCM Champion Cameron Ivory with Sam Fox coming through to complete the men's podium.
After his victory, Brendan had this to say, "This is a really pleasing victory for me. I had a less than ideal run into this year’s Otway Odyssey, and I know that even with the best preparation this race is incredibly challenging. I lined up with no expectation other than to get to the finish. With this in mind I rode so conservatively, I think in the end this was what gave me the energy to attack on the final climbs of the race, even with lingering cramps. To solo to the win from there was so good and I will take huge confidence from this. I also was lucky to be able to make a seamless return to the mountain bike after a long period on the road, I really think that this is due to the equipment I’m on board, I can jump straight on the Anthem and instantly compete with the best in the country on the trails."
