German sprinter Phil Bauhaus scored a victory for Team Sunweb Friday, beating fellow German Marcel Kittel to the line for a statement win at Stage 3 of the Abu Dhabi Tour. It was also Team Sunweb’s first WorldTour win of the new season.
Stage 3 of the five-day stage race in the Gulf Region was the last opportunity for the sprinters, and Bauhaus was motivated to go for the win after missing out the day before. On Thursday’s Stage 2, the team had to fight through heavy crosswinds to bring back team leader Tom Dumoulin, who had been caught up in a crash.
Friday’s stage was a different story. The team executed its plan to perfection, putting the 23-year-old Bauhaus in position to contest the final sprint.
“We have a really good team here for the sprint and I’ve been working well at home,” said Bauhaus, who won in a photo finish riding his TCR Advanced SL team bike and wearing the Giant Pursuit helmet. “My goal here was to go for a podium or take a win, so it’s really nice to be able to achieve that against such a super strong field. It’s always hard to get the first win of the season and get the ball rolling, especially after such an unlucky day here yesterday. I hope we can continue like this into tomorrow and Sunday where we have a lot of cards to play.”
The two remaining stages this weekend will decide the overall for the Abu Dhabi Tour. On Saturday, riders face a 12.6km individual time trial. Sunday’s final stage features a summit finish at Jebel Hafeet.
