Mollema Third at Vuelta Stage 17

6 вересня 2011

On a long, difficult stage with just four days left in the three-week Vuelta a España, Rabobank rider Bauke Mollema once again showed his climbing strength, powering his TCR Advanced SL to third place in Wednesday’s 212km Stage 17 to Peña Cabarga.

Mollema’s show of strength on the final climb, which averaged 13 percent and hit grades of 19 percent in the closing 2km, put him third overall for the day, just 21 seconds behind stage winner Christopher Froome of Great Britain.

Mollema stayed locked in fourth overall in the General Classification with four stages left to go in the season’s final grand tour. He also leap-frogged past GC leader Juan Jose Cobo in the points classification, donning the green jersey worn by the overall points leader. Mollema previously wore the white jersey as the leader of the Combination Classification, awarded to the rider with the top cumulative standing in the Points, Mountains and General Classification.
