Sprinter Graeme Brown gave the Rabobank Pro Cycling Team a podium finish on the team’s home turf in The Netherlands as the Giro d’Italia concluded the last of its three stages in northern Europe before moving to Italy for the remaining two-and-a-half weeks.
On a tough day of racing that tested riders with nasty crosswinds and damaging crashes, Brown stayed near the front and powered his Giant TCR Advanced SL to a second-place finish behind Belgian Wouter Weylandt.
Brown also assumed overall leadership in the points classification.
Rabobank was active throughout the 224km Stage 3 race from Amsterdam to Middelburg. Dutch rider Tom Stamsnijder joined an early breakaway with two other riders and stayed off the front for more than 120km. Crosswinds blasted the field on its journey south to Middleburg throughout the day, causing a few splits in the group.
Brown and his Rabobank teammate Pieter Weening were able to stay with the front group of just 26 riders, and the Australian Brown snagged the podium finish.
After a transfer day on Tuesday, May 11, the Giro d’Italia returns to Italy for Stage 4, a 32.5-kilometer team time trial.
