Tour de France Star Cavendish Back on Track

Fresh off his stunning performance at the Tour de France, Team Columbia’s Mark Cavendish has turned his attention toward the Olympic Games. Cavendish, whose four stage wins made him the revelation of the Tour, will look to cap a dream 2008 season with an Olympic medal in track racing.

Though the 23-year-old Brit from the Isle of Man has been receiving worldwide attention as the latest road racing sensation, his list of track racing accomplishments is just as impressive. Cavendish is a two-time world champion in the Madison, the two-man event he’s contesting in Beijing with teammate Bradley Wiggins. That duo, part of a deep, talented British squad, won their latest world championship this past January in Manchester, England, and will be considered favorites in the Madison event in Beijing.

After sprinting his way to four stage wins in France aboard the new Giant TCR Advanced SL bike, Cavendish withdrew early from the Tour in order to recover and focus on the Olympics. He’ll arrive at the Laoshan Velodrome, where Olympic track racing begins on August 15, as part of a powerful British Cycling team that’s hoping to win more cycling medals than any other nation.
