Lauren ten Dam’s sixth-place general classification finish highlighted an aggressive week of racing by the Rabobank team at the May 15-22 Amgen Tour of California stage race.
Ten Dam rode his Giant TCR Advanced SL to an impressive podium finish in Saturday’s queen stage, a challenging 122km race to the summit of Baldy Mountain outside of Los Angeles. With more than 11,000 feet of climbing and a brutally steep final 5km, it was the most challenging stage ever at the Tour of California.
“I came here to do well in the mountain stages,” Ten Dam told Cyclingnews.com after finishing third behind stage winner Levi Leipheimer. “I think I did a good job and the team is happy.”
Ten Dam’s performance at Mt. Baldy moved him up from ninth to sixth in the general classification. He preserved that standing in Sunday’s final stage from Santa Clarita to Thousand Oaks. The Dutch rider is currently slated to ride July's Tour de France, where he will be a key support rider for team leader Robert Gesink in the mountains.
Rabobank sprinter Oscar Freire finished fourth in the final stage at Thousand Oaks, one of two top-10 finishes on the week. Other highlights for Rabobank included Marten Tjallingii’s fifth-place finish in the Stage 6 time trial.
