Spaniard Oscar Freire kept the Rabobank hot streak alive Wednesday, sprinting to a stage win at the Vuelta a Andalucia Ruta Ciclista del Sol stage race in Spain. The three-time World Champion avoided a crash in the finishing sprint of the 174km stage from La Guardia de Jaén to Córdoba and powered his Giant TCR Advanced SL past Frenchman Jimmy Engoulvent for the win.

Freire’s win was the latest in a string of early-season successes by Rabobank riders. Team leader Robert Gesink took GC honors at the Tour of Oman last Sunday, and Freire’s fellow sprinters Michael Matthews and Theo Bos have also earned stage victories. In all, the team has eight wins so far this year.

Freire also has a history of success at the Vuelta a Andalucia Ruta Ciclista del Sol, commonly referred to as the Ruta del Sol. He now has seven stage victories at the 85-year-old race, and he won the overall title here in 2007. The five-day race concludes Friday.
