Rabobank rider Pieter Weening took over the lead of the Giro d’Italia Wedneday with a classy stage win in Orvieto. In the final 40 kilometers, which featured the famed strade blanche dirt roads of Italy, Weening sailed across the rugged roads on his Giant TCR Advanced SL, bridging up to a breakaway and then launching his solo attack with 10km to go.
Weening’s victory, his biggest since winning a stage at the Tour de France in 2005, put him in the maglia rosa leader’s jersey heading into Stage 6.
“I’m really happy and I’ll try to defend the jersey for as long as possible,” Weening told Cyclingnews.com after winning the 191k stage from Piombino to Orvieto. “The Giro is already perfect for me.”
