Rabobank-Giant rider Mike Teunissen scored the biggest win of his 2011 season when he won Sunday’s U23 race at Round 3 of the Superprestige Series in Hamme-Zogge, Belgium.
Teunissen, one of a handful of rising young stars on the Rabobank-Giant team, sprinted to the win on his Giant TCX Advanced SL, edging out fellow Dutchman and teammate Lars van der Haar by 2 seconds.
The 19-year-old Teunissen, a three-time Dutch national champion on the road, has been coming on strong in his second year racing ’cross with the Rabobank-Giant team. He now sits fourth overall in the Superprestige series.
Van der Haar, meanwhile, finished a strong second in the U23 race and is now second overall in the series, two points behind series leader Wietse Bosmans of Belgium after three rounds.
In the elite men’s race at Hamme-Zogge, Rabobank-Giant rider Bart Aernouts preserved his top-five standing with a sixth-place finish. Aernouts outsprinted former world champion and fellow Belgian Bart Wellens for sixth to remain fourth overall in the series.
