Former Dutch U-23 Champion survives long breakaway for podium finish
Rabobank rider Steven Kruijswijk rode aggressively on Stage 17 of the Giro d'Italia, fighting his way to a podium finish after joining a breakaway that gained nearly 10 minutes on the main field.
Kruijswijk, the 2008 Dutch Under-23 Road Champion, joined a 19-man breakaway that broke away early in the 173-kilometer stage from Brunico to Pejo Terme, and then battled to an impressive third-place finish on his Giant TCR Advanced SL team bike.
With the stage ending on an uphill finish, the riders in the break began attacking each other with 28 kilometers to go. Kruijswijk made all the right moves and put himself in position to make the podium. He finished the day 39 seconds behind stage winner Damien Monier, giving Rabobank another podium finish at one of the toughest Giros in recent memory.
Stage 18 will offer the sprinters one more chance for victory before a series of tough mountain stages and the closing time trial of the three-week Giro d'Italia.
