Langeveld Wins Omloop!

Rabobank rider Sebastian Langeveld scored the biggest win of his career Saturday after a gutsy solo breakaway in a rainy Omloop Het Nieuwsblad. The 26-year-old Dutchman attacked on his Giant TCR Advanced SL with 53km to go in the 203km Belgian semi-classic and outsprinted Spaniard Juan Antonio Flecha of Team Sky to take a dramatic win at the line by just a few centimeters.

Langeveld’s win at 66th running of the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, the traditional opener to the cycling season in Belgium, is the latest sign of Rabobank’s deep talent this year. He’s the sixth Rabobank rider to chalk up a win this season, joining Lars Boom, Michael Matthews, Theo Bos, Robert Gesink and Oscar Freire. The Dutchman’s win was the 10th of the season for Rabobank.

Racers faced cold, rainy conditions in the race, which features hills and cobblestone sections in and around the city of Gent. After an early breakaway was reeled in, Langeveld made his move on the Eikenberg climb. He went clear and was alone until Flecha caught him 15km from the line. While Flecha, the 2010 Omloop winner (when he raced for Rabobank), was considered the favorite at that point, Langeveld dug deep and held off the Spanish veteran.
