18 mei 2012
Last week Giant chairman and founder King Liu completed his latest two-wheeled journey, a 6-day, 264-kilometer trip through Japan. It was part of King’s “Green World on Wheels” initiative, a series of rides around the world to experience various cycling cultures and spread his message on the benefits of the cycling lifestyle.
More than 40 riders from Taiwan, home to Giant's world headquarters, joined King on the trip to Japan. The group was welcomed by government officials and more than 120 Japanese riders as they explored the area around the Seto Inland Sea.
King rode through Ehime, Hiroshima, Imabari City and Onomichi City, and enjoyed an 80km stretch in Shimanami Kaido that he said was ideal for cycling.
“The landscape there is incredible, a cycling paradise,” King said.
Throughout the tour, King and the group experienced well-designed and maintained bike routes and paths, and spoke about the progression of cycling infrastructure in Japan and Taiwan.
At age 77, King has taken on the role of being a cycling ambassador. In the past five years he has ridden the entirety of Taiwan, completed a 1,668-kilometer tour from Beijing to Shanghai, and ridden more than 500km through The Netherlands. His mission is to share his own passion for cycling, and also to learn about new ways to make his home nation of Taiwan more conducive to safe, healthy cycling.
