Robert Gesink kept the Rabobank hot streak alive Friday, winning the decisive Stage 4 at the Tour of Oman. Gesink, Rabobank’s team leader, launched a solo attack halfway up the final climb to Jabal al Akhdar on his Giant TCR Advanced SL team bike and powered to a solo victory.

Gesink’s aggressive ride cracked open the GC standings. He flew up the steep 5.8km climb to Jabal al Akhdar, which has an average grade of 10.8 percent. At the finish, which stands 1,235 meters above sea level, the 24-year-old Dutchman had a 47-second lead over second-place Edvald Boasson Hagen of Norway.

The stage win netted Gesink the red leader’s jersey with two stages, including Saturday’s 18.5km time trial, left before the race finish on Sunday. He carries a 44-second GC lead into the hilly time trial stage.

Rabobank has so far dominated the six-day Tour of Oman, winning three of four stages. The team’s sprinter Theo Bos won the first and third stages, showing clear progress in his evolution from being a world champion track racer to a top pro road sprinter.
