Rabobank-Giant rider Bart Aernouts narrowly missed a second consecutive podium appearance in the World Cup cyclocross series with a hard-fought fourth place finish on Sunday.

Racing at Round 4 in Igorre, Spain, on his Giant TCX Advanced SL, Aernouts was in third place coming into the final corner before he slid out and fell back a position. The Belgian veteran recovered quickly, however, and finished fourth to maintain his top-five overall ranking in the World Cup.

With large crowds on hand in Igorre, which was hosting its eighth World Cup event, the course was muddy and wet. This weekend’s event featured an elite men’s race, with no U23 or women’s event.

Aernouts’ Dutch teammate Gerben de Knegt finished 15th in the race, moving up to 11th place overall in the World Cup.

In other European ’cross racing this weekend, Rabobank road pro Lars Boom, the 2008 Cyclocross World Champion, won the “Boonen and Friends” charity race event in Belgium. Hosted by Belgian pro Tom Boonen, the race benefits the “Move to Improve” children’s charity.

Boom, a winner of 10 consecutive cyclocross national titles in The Netherlands, is focused on road racing these days and was making a rare appearance at a ’cross race. He started one minute behind the rest of the starters in Saturday’s race, and still managed to win on his Giant TCX Advanced SL.

Boom’s Rabobank teammate Maarten Wynants finished second, while Boonen, racing for the first time since breaking his wrist in the Vuelta a España earlier this year, finished 15th.
