Big Win for Boom at Ster ZLM!

17 június 2012

Rabobank rider Lars Boom won a stage and finished second overall behind world champion Mark Cavendish at the four-day Ster ZLM Toer stage race in The Netherlands, which concluded on Sunday.

Boom won the third stage of the June 14-17 race with a gutsy move on a difficult day of racing in the Ardennes mountains. On the uphill finish at La Gileppe, the Dutchman attacked on his Giant TCR Advanced SL, holding off Cavendish to take the win.

“I knew I had a chance because Cav' was of course already spent,” said Boom, who survived the day’s 10 climbs to put himself in position to win. “At 200 meters I attacked and he couldn’t pass me. It’s quite a special feeling to beat him.”

The stage win put Boom in second overall, and he defended his GC position in Sunday’s final stage to secure the podium finish.

In addition to Boom’s win and podium finish, Rabobank’s Australian sprinter Mark Renshaw took two second-place finishes on the week.

“Mark is showing good form,” said Rabobank team director Erik Dekker, who pointed out that many of the world’s top sprinters were competing at the Ster ZLM Toer. “The differences with the other top riders were small.”
