Cavendish: “This is my finest victory!”
Team High Road’s Mark Cavendish, the 22-year old from the Isle of Man, took his first Grand Tour victory with a Stage 4 win in the Giro d’Italia.
Riding the prototype Giant TCR Advanced SL, the “Manx Express” surged past Italy’s Daniele Bennati of the Liquigas squad and Germany’s Robert Forster of Gerolsteiner at the finish line to seal the win in the 183 km stage.
Cavendish is quoted by Velo News as saying: “This is my finest victory. It was the result of my team’s work which kept me surrounded over the last 20 km. The wind was blowing hard and Bennati went off at a good time, but I was able to follow him and overtake him. In terms of the sprinters’ hierarchy, I reckon I’m among the best.”
In addition to another Cavendish victory, Team High Road is celebrating Morris Possoni’s lead in the Best Young Rider Classification. And after 4 stages, Possoni is fourth in the overall General Classification, just :08 seconds behind race leader Franco Pellizotti of Liquigas. Joining Possoni in the top 10 of the GC is High Road team mate Kanstantin Sivtsov. The rider from Belarus sits in seventh place, :18 seconds behind Pellizotti. Sivtsov is coming off of the overall win at the Tour of Georgia two weeks ago.
No team in the pro peloton has as many victories this season as the men and women of Team High Road.
