Vos Dominates Giro Donne!

8 julio 2012

Rabobank Women’s Team rider Marianne Vos completed her domination of the women’s Giro d’Italia Saturday, capturing the overall title for the second year in a row. The Dutch rider showed no signs of being slowed by the broken collarbone she suffered in May, winning sprints, climbs and time trials over the course of the nine-day Giro Donne.

The No. 1 ranked woman road racer in the world won five of nine stages on her way to the overall victory. She started the week with a one-two punch in the first two stages, winning a sprint finish on her TCR Advanced SL on Stage 1 in Naples, and a 7.2km time trial on her Trinity Advanced SL on Stage 2 in Rome.

“It was great to start out with a victory and then also win the TT,” Vos said after the race finished Saturday in Bergamo. “I struggled through the first hills but I was getting better and better throughout the Giro.”

After winning the first two stages, Vos surrendered the pink leader’s jersey to American Evelyn Stevens on Stage 3 but then reclaimed the lead on the summit of Montecatini Alto the following day. She went on to win two more stages after that, capturing the final General Classification win by a margin of 3:27 over Emma Pooley of Great Britain.

“The team gave me the confidence to win the Giro,” Vos said. “They helped me through the stages. I’m really happy I could finish it off.”

Vos is now focused on the upcoming Olympics in London, where she will be aiming for gold in the women’s road race.
