13-year-old now races on “SWEET” Giant Defy Composite Bicycle
Back in August Yoshi Yoshimoto of Diamond Bar, CA, entered a contest he saw promoted on Universal Sports during that cable channel’s coverage of the 2011 Vuelta a España bicycle race. Grand Prize in the sweepstakes was a 2012 Giant Defy Composite 3 bicycle with a retail value of $1650. When he was notified two months later that he’d won the bike, he was skeptical at first. “I never win anything, so at first I thought it was a scam,” Yoshimoto said. “But then I did some investigative work and realized I did enter the sweepstakes. I was shocked to learn that I won!”
The 43-year old property manager is already a cycling fanatic, racing in the Masters category for Fullerton, CA based Team Velocity. He currently owns several high-end bikes, but his 13-year old son, Kenji – who also races – must, “…ride on my hand-me-downs,” according to Yoshimoto. “So, I decided to give the Grand Prize to him!”
Now the Chaparral Middle School 8th grader – who recently placed third in the Junior category at a Cyclocross race in San Luis Obispo – could be even faster. “Dad asked me, ‘do you want a new Giant bike?’” said Kenji. “As soon as my dad told me, I went online to check out the Defy Composite 3. After I saw the picture I said, ‘SWEET!’”
The Giant Defy Composite 3 features a hand-built frame constructed at Giant’s Composite Manufacturing facility in Taiwan. T-600 raw carbon fiber is used to create the composite material for these lightweight, stiff frames. Giant’s complete Defy Composite series of bikes feature endurance-oriented geometry to maximize comfort and speed during long hours in the saddle.
“I love it!” said Kenji. “I’ve already put major climbing miles on it!”
Mike Franze, owner of Fullerton Bicycles, is the Giant bicycle retailer who delivered the new bike to Kenji and his dad. “Kenji was all smiles when he got the bike,” said Mike. “This is the best part of my job – making people smile and sharing the joy of seeing people ride.”
