Giger has come on strong at the end of the year, winning in China and Langkawi in the fall.

Giger Wins Langkawi Stage Race!

October 21, 2012

Giant XC racer Fabian Giger wrapped up the overall title at the six-day Langkawi International MTB Challenge Sunday, adding a major late-season victory to his successful 2012 campaign that saw the Swiss rider rise to fifth in the UCI world rankings.

Giger’s teammate, Swedish champion Emil Lindgren, finished fourth overall and won a stage at Langkawi, a third-year event that featured an international lineup of World Cup talent competing in a variety of stage formats, including two marathon stages. Giger and Lindgren both reached the podium riding the new XtC Advanced SL 29er.

After finishing eighth in the opening day prologue, a short 1.8km dash, Giger took over the lead in the first long stage, a 65km race on Round Island. Fresh off his victory two week earlier at a World Cup test event in China, Giger showed he still has top form late in the season. He took the lead early in Stage 1 and went on to win by 37 seconds over Kristian Hynek of the Czech Republic.

Giger won again on Stage 2, extending his GC lead to over two minutes, then rode defensively over the final three days to take the win. Stage 4 was particularly sweet for the Rabobank-Giant team, with Lindgren winning and Giger finishing second.

"This is a memorable win for me," Giger told Cyclingnews.com after winning the overall. "It is quite tough throughout in the overall race in Langkawi considering the heat, humidity, rain, deep trail, slippery tracks and all. But now I am super-happy about winning it today."
