Rabobank rider Robert Gesink closed out his summer trip to North America with a strong second-place finish in Saturday’s Gran Prix Cycliste de Québec in Canada.

The Dutch rider, who also competed in the USA Pro Cycling Challenge in Colorado last month, showed great form in Québec, finishing a bike length behind Belgian national champion Philippe Gilbert to land on the podium for the second consecutive year.

Gesink, considered the strong favorite at two weekend ProTour races in Canada—the GP Quebec and the GP Montreal, where he finished third and first last year—was a marked man on his Giant TCR Advanced SL.

“I think I was stronger that last year, today,” he told Cyclingnews.com after his close second-place finish in Quebec City.

On Monday, the day after racing the back-to-back ProTour events in Canada, Gesink was named to the Dutch National team for the upcoming World Championships in Copenhagen. Gesink will be joined by Rabobank teammates Bauke Mollema, Lars Boom, Pieter Weening and Maarten Tjallingii.
