BIKERADAR.COM ON THE GIANT TCX ADVANCED SL: “BULLET-LIKE ACCELERATION”

A screen capture from the BikeRadar.com review of the Giant TCX Advanced SL. Editor Matt Pacocha says the championship-winning ‘cross bike has “…bullet-like acceleration.”

Giant’s 2012 TCX Advanced SL is a proven ‘cross race winner.  In one weekend, four Rabobank-Giant cyclocross stars claimed their country’s national titles riding the machine. Katie Compton won the 2012 US National Cyclocross Women’s Championship.  In the Netherlands, Lars Boom won the Dutch Men’s title, Marianne Vos won the Women’s crown, and Lars van der Haar won the U23 Dutch title.

Matt Pacocha, US editor at BikeRadar.com, spent some time with the Giant TCX Advanced SL and while the experience did not turn him into a “Europhile” he did come away with an appreciation for this Rabobank-inspired racing machine.

ON THE RIDE:
“The…bike comes with geometry straight out of the very traditional European pro cyclocross ranks – short reach, slack angles and a tall bottom bracket… some unique advantages present themselves…the additional clearance for mud and sand riding. This offers an advantage in the dry, too: you almost never have to stop pedaling…If you have a big motor, you’ll be able to use this characteristic to your advantage.”

ON THE SPEC:
“Giant equip the TCX Advanced SL with a Shimano Dura-Ace mechanical transmission that’s paired to FSA’s top K-Force Light MegaExo crank and TRP’s EuroX Magnesium wide-profile brakes in a custom black and blue color. The wheelset is Giant’s own P-SLR1 Aero set, made up of a hybrid carbon-alloy rim and Giant-branded DT Swiss hubs. The cockpit is from Giant’s Contact house brand, while the saddle is Fi’zi:k’s Antares with K:ium (titanium alloy) rails”

BUYING ADVICE:
“…the TCX Advanced SL frame weighed just 1,193g – making it one of the lightest ‘cross chassis we’ve tested. On the race course, this light weight …translates into bullet-like acceleration…After a rider comes to terms with the tall bottom bracket, a second beneficial feature becomes apparent: the TCX Advanced SL is incredibly smooth”
