My name is Nicky Samuels, I was born in Whangarei (near the top of the North Island), New Zealand on the 28th of February 1983.
I now live in Wanaka (small resort town not far from Queenstown in the South Island), and follow the ITU Triathlon World Championship series (WCS) circuit around the world during the Northern Hemisphere summer season.
I am currently a member of the Triathlon New Zealand elite squad and the TCG 79 Parthenay pro team in France.
I started triathlon in 2003. Whilst working in Whangarei as a life guard during the University holidays my ex-high school teacher asked me to come and train with her - nowadays she is known Olympian and Commonwealth games medalist Sam Warriner!
I trained up a little and raced the 2003 World Triathlon champs in Queenstown and placed 2nd in the 20-24 age group. Being a field hockey rep player I made the tough decision in 2004 to throw in the stick, get a coach, a bike and see where I could take my new found triathlon talent!
Seven years later, top 20 in the world with numerous NZ, Oceania, world cup podiums and part of the New Zealand elite team I am training and racing full time on the World Championship circuit with the goal of representing NZ at the London Olympic Games in 2012.
