Van der Haar Wins in Diegem!

24 December 2011

Rabobank-Giant rider Lars van der Haar sprinted to another win at the sixth round of the Superprestige cyclocross series in Diegem, Belgium, Friday, extending his overall lead in the Under-23 category. It was the second win of the week for the Rabobank-Giant team after elite category rider Gerben de Knegt won Wedneday’s race in Surhuisterveen, The Netherlands.

Van der Haar and the rest of the field in Diegem faced muddy conditions in the Friday evening event near Brussels. The U23 World Champion from The Netherlands battled Belgian rider Wietse Bosmans and then attacked on the last run-up. He sprinted to the win on his Giant TCX Advanced SL, extending his lead in the series.

Van der Haar’s Dutch teammates Mike Teunissen and Michiel van der Heijden finished third and fourth respectively in the U23 race. In the men's elite race, Rabobank-Giant rider Bart Aernouts had a strong top-five finish, crossing the line fourth, one spot behind series leader Sven Nys.

Wednesday’s race in Surhuisterveen was also a muddy affair. For de Knegt, the win there marked a return to form. The Dutch rider was injured earlier in the season and has shown steady improvement over the past few weeks. It was the third time de Knegt has won in Surhuisterveen, and he was joined on the podium by his Dutch teammate Lars Boom. The former World Cyclocross Champion is now focused on road racing and only participating in a handful of ’cross races this year. He finished the race in Surhuisterveen in third place.
