Rabobank-Giant’s Lindgren Wins in Cyprus!

27 February 2012

The Rabobank-Giant Off-Road Team tandem of Emil Lindgren and Fabian Giger are off to a strong start on the international cross-country circuit. Both finished on the podium at Round 2 of the Cyprus Sunshine Cup, a three-day stage race in Afxentia. Lindgren finished second overall and had a stage win on his XtC Advanced SL and Giger was third overall on his XtC Composite 29er.

The weekend consisted of three stages: a time trial, a point-to-point cross country, and a traditional multi-lap cross country race. Lindgren, the Swedish National Champion, finished the opending day TT third, 6 seconds behind the day’s winner, World Champion Jaroslav Kulhavy. Giger was another 8 seconds back in sixth.

On Saturday Lindgren scored his first win of the season, winning the 44.5km XC race in a sprint finish. He won in dramatic fashion—a punctured tire on the final climb forced him to make a wheel change in the tech zone. He pulled it off, losing only 15 seconds, then reclaimed the lead on the descent.

“I knew I could catch back up on the long downhill,” Lindgren said.

The final day’s circuit race was a close-fought battle at the front from start to finish. Lindgren stayed right there, finishing third to secure second-place overall. Giger was right behind him in second, ending the weekend third overall.
