1250 miles in 10 days for flying duo

At the start of June, two friends will set out on a charity bike ride that will see them cover 1250 miles in a target of 10 days as they visit 17 RAF stations – not bad for a pair of non-cyclists! Grant Smith and Calum Parker who work at RAF Marham in Norfolk have been putting in the miles on their Giant Defy’s supplied by Cleveland Cycles in Coningsby, Lincoln. They will be riding Giant Defy Advanced road bikes for the real thing which begins in less than two weeks; the perfect choice for an all-day-riding balance of comfortable endurance geometry, efficient power transfer and light weight.

The duo chose to embark on an event which neither had experience in to ensure that it was a real personal challenge and they hope to prove that with enough determination and hard work it is possible to ride an incredible distance over a short period. The riders will be supporting the Royal Air Force Association and hope to raise £10,000 in total, already achieving an amazing £4,000 through collection boxes and the local Air Cadets!

The riders will be joined on one of the legs by Jon-Allan Butterworth, a former RAF serviceman who was injured in Iraq. Following his injuries Jon took up cycling as part of his recovery with support from the RAF Association; he took to the sport so well that he is now busy preparing for the Paralympic Games where he is aiming for gold medals! Jon recently hosted the two riders at the Manchester Velodrome as they took to the track for the first time – he soon built up their confidence enough to attempt ‘The Flying 200’ which is one of his Paralympic events, and offered them training tips along with an insight into what it takes to be a top cyclist.
