Giant Triathlete on Madrid podium for 2nd consecutive year

Helen Jenkins put in another impressive performance this weekend. Following her win at the Strathclyde Park Triathlon recently it was back to business for the second round of the 2011 Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship, with the Giant triathlete putting the crash she suffered in the first round in Sydney firmly behind her.

Jenkins put in a strong performance forming part of the chase group in the swim behind a leading group of 3 athletes. A strong bike leg on board her Giant TCR Advanced SL moved her into contention for the win as the lead group and chase group became one and a group of 16 led the rest of the field by around 30 seconds. She remained in contention during the run as Jenkins and young Canadian Paula Findlay who won in Sydney battled it out; joined by Andrea Hewitt of New Zealand for the majority of the 10km before Hewitt was replaced by French athlete Emmie Charayon in the final lap. Findlay managed to break away from Jenkins with about 400 metres to go to take the win.

Findlay’s impressive second win in two races cements her lead in the series while Jenkins silver takes her up to 5th overall – a very strong position following the crash which hampered her first result of the 2011 series claiming her early points. With another four races and plenty of points up for grabs there’s everything still to play for.
