Giant Triathlete in ITU World Triathlon Series pole position
This weekend saw Giant Triathlete Helen Jenkins race to 4th place in the penultimate round of the ITU World Triathlon Series in Lausanne, giving her the points to rise to the top of the rankings.
Jenkins led the swim with fellow Brit Lucy Hall before racing almost half the bike leg solo as Hall dropped off, before eventually being caught by the chasing pack. Heading into the run Jenkins formed part of a 5 strong lead group which included eventual race winner Barbara Riveros Diaz. She pushed the pace and eventually reduced the group to four which was led by Australian Emma Jackson over the final kilometre until a late surge by Riveros Diaz sealed her win.
But it will be Jenkins who will wear the no. 1 at the Beijing Series Grand Final in September – her fourth place finish giving her the overall lead in the World Triathlon Series by 201 points, on 2913. Riveros Diaz is now second on 2712 while Canadian Paula Findlay, who did not race in Lausanne, is in third on 2637 points.
Jenkins also competed in the Team Triathlon World Championships on Sunday as part of a four strong Great Britain team of Helen Jenkins, Jodie Stimpson, Jonathan Brownlee and Alistair Brownlee.
Competed in a 4 x mixed relay format, Jenkins played a pivotal role - powering away from the competition on the swim before riding and running solo to hand Alistair Brownlee a 10-second lead on the anchor leg. Brownlee then rode and ran solo, increasing the lead and handing Great Britain the 2011 ITU Team Triathlon World Championship.
