Young riders head to Belgium to race with continental partners
Doug DEWEY and Llewellyn KINCH of the GWR team guest rode the OMLOOP VAN HET WAASLAND, UCI 1.2 Europe Tour, for Team Terra Footwear - Bicycle line; GWR team's Belgian partners for 2011 season. Travelling to Belgium on the 12th March and staying at the team's headquarters in Ottenburg, DEWEY and KINCH joined up with their Belgian team mates for a training ride, prior to Sunday's race.
Arriving at the start line, on Sunday afternoon for a 1pm roll out, DEWEY and KINCH looked forward to a 191 kilometre race consisting of 3 laps of a 27 kilometre circuit, followed by 9 laps of a 12.4km finishing circuit. With the race lasting just 4 hours and 18 minutes won by Aidis KRUOPIS of the LANDBOUWKREDIET team and clocking an average speed of 44.4km/hr, DEWEY and KINCH both finished well up in a large bunch sprint.
Taking good form, from their first weekend of racing, KINCH claimed 26th and DEWEY 64th as they crossed the line; with the same time as the race winner. KINCH commented after the race that, "The last few kilometres were mental," as the speed went up and the riders began to line it out for the sprint. He went on to say the he was a "Blocked in a bit, at the finish so couldn't sprint!" However he was pleased with his first ride, for Team Terra Footwear - Bicycle line and is looking forward to racing for the team once again, in Belgium. Hans Huylebroeck, team manager for Team Terra Footwear, told us that "They (DEWEY and KINCH) did a nice race' he went on to say that the GWR team riders were very quickly integrated into Team Terra Footwear - Bicycle line. A partnership that will develop over the coming season and be mutually beneficial for both cycling teams.
Both DEWEY and KINCH will join up with their GWR team mates this weekend at the Evesham vale road race, where KINCH took second last year and will be looking to improve on that result.
The eight man squad, sponsored for the 2011 season by Swindon Cycles Superstore, High 5, Giant UK, Kalas clothing, Joyriders cycling holidays and Continental Tyres.
