Three victories kick start GWR Team's 2011 season

The GWR team took three victories in the first weekend of racing, on the road and in a time trail. Both of which proved to be a good indicator of early season form, ahead of this weekends major targets of the Omloop van het Waasland and the Roy Thame Cup.

Doug DEWEY rode in the third round of the Spring Time Pursuits, on Saturday 5th March 2011, as preparation for next weekends Omloop van het Waasland With the riders competing in a handi capped format, DEWEY started in the last group, and found himself having to make up over 3 minutes over the 30 mile race distance. However, it proved not to be insurmountable as all groups came together at mid distance. With 1 lap to go DEWEY forced his way into the leading 12 man group, and with 3km to go he attacked to solo away for his first win in 2011.

DEWEY went onto compete in the hilly, 24.4 mile Hard Riders Time Trial, on Sunday 6th March 2011. Setting a time of 53.39 to take the victory by 1min and 17 seconds and to set a new course record smashing the previous record by over 1 minute.

Llewellyn KINCH competed in San Fairy Ann Crit on Saturday 5th March 2011. After bridging to a break of six riders at mid-distance, coming into the closing stages the group was reduced to four, with KINCH amongst the thick of the action. Winding up for the final sprint for the line, two riders jumped early and managed to gain four bike lengths, KINCH sprinted after them, reducing the gap to just one bike length by the line, to take third in his first race of the 2011 season. KINCH speaking afterwards said that he felt ’Strong from Winter training' and that his 'Sprint is good but the tactics are a little rusty’.'

DEWEY and KINCH will now travel to Belgium this weekend, to compete in the Omloop van het Waasland with Team Terra footwear. This will be an important first test for both of them in 2011 as they will be lining up against some of the world's best road squads including: AN POST-SEAN KELLY, BEVEREN 2000-QUICK STEP, TEAM NETAPP, WILLEMS VERANDA, PRO LANDBOUWKREDIT-TONSTEINER, TOPSPORT VLAANDEREN-MERATOR, ISD and KAYTUSHA to name but a few.

And finally, last but by no means least, Peter KENCH took his first win for 2011 in the Newbury time trial on Saturday 5th March 2011, where he utilised his excellent form from a Winter of Cyclo-Cross racing. KENCH will compete for the team in the Roy Thame Cup this coming weekend.

The eight man squad, sponsored for the 2011 season by Swindon Cycles Superstore, High 5, Giant UK, Kalas clothing, Joyriders cycling holidays and Continental Tyres.
