New oversize headset and steerer tube design substantially increases steering stiffness

WHISTLER, B.C., CANADA (July 19, 2011) — Giant introduced the all-new OverDrive 2 technology, its latest off-road innovation for 2012, at the Crankworx Whistler mountain bike festival this week.

OverDrive 2 uses an oversized, tapered steerer tube which is designed to work in conjunction with massive 1 ¼-inch top and 1 ½-inch bottom bearing sizes. Giant is also offering a full range of new 1 ¼-inch stems to work with OverDrive 2 technology.

The increased size of OverDrive 2 results in up to 30 percent more torsional steering stiffness from an aluminium steerer tube, compared to Giant’s existing OverDrive technology.

OverDrive 2 is an open standard that Giant developed in conjunction with major suspension manufacturers including Marzocchi, Fox Racing Shox and RockShox. Also featured on many of Giant’s 2012 road models, its key benefits for mountain bikers are sharper handling and improved cornering capabilities in rugged off-road terrain. OverDrive 2 is included on a variety of Giant’s 2012 cross-country, trail and all-mountain bikes.

“We were able to really boost front-end stiffness without adding weight,” said Kevin Dana, Giant Global Category Manager - MTB. “The best part is it allowed us to noticeably improve handling in a variety of bikes made for different types of terrain. From the most weight-conscious XC racers to aggressive all-mountain, everyone benefits from a bike that corners better and tracks truer through rough terrain.”

OverDrive 2 can be found in select 2012 Giant off-road models in the following series:

XtC Composite
Anthem X 29er
Anthem X Advanced SL
Anthem X Advanced
Anthem X
Trance X

These and other 2012 Giant off-road bikes will be available at Giant retailers later this summer.
