BOTTRILL SETS NEW 25 MILE PB
April 16, 2012
Drag2zero race team smash team competition record by 3 minutes
On a cold but dry Sunday morning Matthew Bottrill and the www.Drag2zero.co.uk race team travelled to South Wales to compete in a 25mile time trial. The team had one intention; to break the team 25mile team competition record of 2.27.45 set by Bottrill's old team. Bottrill's personal target was to break the individual record of 45.54 set by Dave McCann. Cold conditions suggested that this would not be a fast day, but with Bottrill in good form heading towards the National Championships in 7 weeks time, the team was determined to beat the clock.
Bottrill's team mates Mark Holton and Derek Parkinson set great times of 48.07 and 48.52 and competitor Jeff Jones achieved 49.46 - so it started to look like there could be a chance of Bottrill getting close to the competition record.
Leaving the start at 12am Bottrill was on a mission and was firing down the home straight aboard his Giant Trinity Advanced SL time trail machine sporting new Ulitmate Ceramic bearings, Smart Enve 8.9 front wheel and wearing Bont Crono aero shoes. Hitting a top speed of 50mph on the outward leg and averaging 34mph to the turn, Bottrill was on course for the record but a stiff head wind and the cold weather (which meant low air pressure) looked set to hold him back.
Bottrill stopped the clock in an amazing 46.47 for a 32.1mph average speed And the 4th fastest time ever ridden by an individual in the United Kingdom. With great times from his teams mates Drag2zero also smashed the team record by over 3minutes.
Speaking after the ride Bottrill commented;
"Well that went pretty good!! I can say my form is coming nicely, with the improvement's in equipment and my determination I think the breaking the record is very possible. But the main target and focus for the season is the National 25; the blue ribbon event, in British cycling. I just want to say a big thank you to all my family, team mates, sponsors and supporters that make days like this possible. A special thanks goes out to Martin Garner and Pete Lavine for making this trip possible and for driving and supporting me at the race today."
