Berasategui was competing on her Trinity Advanced SL at a major triathlon for the first time.
Spanish triathlete Virginia Berasategui competed in her first major triathlon as a Giant-sponsored athlete Saturday, finishing fifth in the pro women’s field at the Avia Wildflower Triathlon in Lake San Antonio, California.
Berasategui, winner of the 2009 Wildflower Triathlon, rode her Giant Trinity Advanced SL in the long-course event, which featured a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike and 13.1-mile run. The 35-year-old from the Basque Region of Spain was in contention for the win before she and Jodie Swallow of Great Britain were assessed two-minute penalties for position fouls in the bike leg.
In the end, Berasategui finished with a time of 4:37:16, about nine-and-a-half minutes off the winning mark of Brit Leanda Cave. Berasategui is focusing on several Ironman distance triathlons this year, including the Hawaii Ironman World Championships in October.
