Rhys joined Drapac Porsche Cycling in 2009, bringing to the team an immense amount of international racing experience after spending the last three years racing with European teams DFL-cyclingnews.com and Trek Marco Polo. In 2009, Rhys competed in the Tour of Qatar and the Tour de Taiwan, the second of which saw him play a key role to enable his team mate to hold the yellow jersey for three stages. In Europe he won the Ronde van Giessenburg criterium, finished 9th in stage 3 of the Tour de Gironde and placed 23rd in the prestigious Halle Ingooigem. Returning to Australia for the second half of the year, Rhys was named most aggressive rider in the Tour of Tasmania, claimed fastest time in the Wagga to Albury handicap and finished in the top ten on stage 5 and 6 of the Jayco Herald Sun Tour. Rhys is enjoying a balanced lifestyle living in Australia, completing his third year of his Diploma in Building Design and Drafting and continuing to compete at the elite level.
