Monique's story is unlike any other in the world of pro cycling. Paralyzed from the hips down since she was 13, she became a world class Paralympic athlete, capturing two silver medals in Beijing in 2008 and winning the 2009 Ironman World Championships with her handcycle. But that's not the amazing part. In 2010 Monique was training in her wheelchair for the 2012 Paralympics when she suffered an accident. While recovering, her feet started to tingle and, miraculously, she started to be able to move them. She took her first steps in July 2010, and soon she got on a bicycle. Doctors have no explanation for the incredible recovery. The 2009 Dutch Disabled Athlete of the Year has new goals now. As part of the Rabobank Women's Team, she is training to compete on her bicycle, and providing inspiration to her teammates and all those who learn her story.
