Road Worlds Geelong, Australia 29 September – 3rd October.
The UCI road World Championships are being held in the city of Geelong, Australia 29 September – 3rd October.
The 77th UCI Road World Championships is second only to the legendary Tour de France in terms of importance and prestige in international cycling. This event will bring the world’s best riders to Australia.
The event will be held over 5 days of competition. It will feature Elite Men and Women competitors as well as Under 23 Men’s to compete in Time Trial and Road Race events based in Geelong. In addition to the challenging courses set in Geelong for these competitors, for the first time in a World Championship, the Elite Men’s Road Race will begin in one city (Melbourne) and finish in another (Geelong), finishing with 11 laps of the tough and challenging 15.9km circuit.
Riders and teams will assemble at Federation Square in Melbourne, the physical and cultural heart of the City.
They will venture South from here, crossing the Yarra River, move past the Arts Centre, past the National Gallery, before making their way across to the Westgate Freeway.
Once on the freeway, riders will position themselves appropriately and climb the Iconic Westgate Bridge.
Riders will continue on the freeway for the first 25km of the race, before leaving the freeway and taking in the suburban City of Wyndham and the centre of Werribee. The race will leave Werribee, rolling past the racecourse along Bulban Rd, before moving out into some vast wide open space.
With little in the way of cover, high winds can potentially cause havoc throughout this section, perhaps applying some early pressure on the pedals. The race passes by the foot of the You Yangs National Park. The race continues West, before then joining the Princes Hwy leading into the regional City of Geelong from the North. Just before the peloton reaches the city centre it turns towards the bay, joining the road race circuit at the renowned Geelong Waterfront.
The Giant crew will be based at “The Bike Shop”, presented by RIDE Cycling, which will command a central position on Geelong’s Cunningham pier, only meters from the individual time trial and road race courses. We will be set up with the new 2011 high end range of Road and TT bikes. Come in and say hi to the crew.
