Sanchez Strikes Again in Spain!

April 15, 2012

Rabobank rider Luis Leon Sanchez captured his second win of the season Saturday, winning Stage 2 at the three-day Vuelta a Castilla y Leon in Spain. The 28-year-old Spaniard joined a breakaway group on the 158.7km stage in Avila and attacked from a group of nine on the final climb to score the win on his Giant TCR Advanced SL.

The stage win put Sanchez in the leader’s jersey for a day, and he credited his teammates for helping him pull off his second win this year in difficult conditions.

“In the beginning of the stage it was really cold and wet,” he said. “I’m not too crazy about that. But the team supported me very well during that first hour. Later on it was Tom Jelte Slagter who really did a lot for me. Like almost always with racing, it is a team achievement.”

Sanchez, the three-time Spanish Time Trial Champion, is in his second year with Rabobank. It’s the first time he has raced on a non-Spanish team and he says he is feeling much more comfortable this season—and it shows in his results.
