The Rabobank team started off the Tirreno-Adriatico stage race in Italy with a bang, dominating Wednesday’s Stage 1 Team Time Trial on their Giant Trinity Advanced SL TT bikes.
While the second- through fourth-place teams (Garmin-Cervelo, HTC Highroad and Saxo Bank SunGard) were tightly bunched within 3 seconds of each other, Rabobank finished 9 seconds clear, clocking a time of 18:09 on the 16.8km course in Marina de Carrara.
The opening day win at the seven-day ProTour race was the 12th of the year for Rabobank, which has been on a tear since the season opened in January. Lars Boom helped power the team to an average speed of 55 kph. Boom crossed the finish line first to earn the overall race leader’s jersey heading into Thursday’s Stage 2, a 202km race from Carrara to Arezzo.
