GIANT PARTNERS WITH SPY AND RIDE CYCLERY TO FORM REGIONAL CYCLING TEAM
July 26, 2012
California-based road and cyclocross team will include elite and amateur racers
Giant, SPY and RIDE Cyclery announced today that they are banding together to sponsor a new road and cyclocross program that includes a Pro category 1-2 team as well as Masters level racers.
The SPY-GIANT-RIDE Cycling Team is a partnership between Giant, the world leader in bicycle technology and craftsmanship, the SPY eyewear brand, and RIDE Cyclery, a leading San Diego bicycle retailer.
“Giant is partnered with many world champion teams and athletes, but we also have a mission to grow local cycling scenes and collaborate with motivated amateur racers,” said Perry “PK” Kramer, Giant USA’s San Diego and Orange County account executive. “Partnering with a committed brand like SPY and a strong retail partner in RIDE Cyclery helps Giant connect with racers and riders in Southern California.”
Giant will supply the teams and its members with bikes and gear, including its flagship road bike, the TCR Advanced SL, and its World Championship cyclocross bike, the TCX Advanced SL.
The roots of the SPY-GIANT-RIDE program were planted by SPY, a well-established and recently invigorated eyewear brand that launched a regional cycling team last year in Southern California with wonderful results. Now SPY is aiming to expand its presence in the cycling world even further.
“SPY has been on a mission to shake things up and create excitement in the cycling world over the last year, especially in our backyard of Southern California, where we already sponsor a collection of the best cyclists, world class triathletes, events and entire race series,” said Michael Marckx, SPY’s president and CEO. “Now we get to take the next leap for our brand and regional team in this new partnership with Giant, which has come onboard as the major team sponsor.”
The third partner in the team, RIDE Cyclery in Encinitas, California, is establishing itself as an anchor within its own cycling community.
“The timing couldn’t be better for RIDE,” said store owner Brent Garrigus, who is also a rider on the team. “We’re preparing to move to a new marquee location on the Pacific Coast Highway, just above Moonlight Beach. The combination of our new team and new location will be a win for the entire Southern California cycling community.”
Details on the new team, including upcoming announcements on riders, a racing schedule, and ways you can become involved with the team, will be announced later this summer.
