(June 9, 2008) This weekend saw Giant Triathlete Helen Tucker of Great Britain take gold in the Vancouver Triathlon World Championships and with that she was crowned Triathlon World Champion!
The race culminated in a sprint finish between Great Britain’s Helen Tucker and American Sarah Haskins, after both beat pre-race favorite and defending World Champion Vanessa Fernandes out of the water.
The 40km cycling event saw a group of six take the lead and late in the first lap Helen Tucker and Haskins made a break and clawed a minute lead by the half-way mark. They built on this during a blistering bike session and by the second transition they had gained a 2 minute advantage over the rest of the field for the run.
Both athletes fought side by side until the final stretch when Helen pulled ahead of the American to take the Gold and become Triathlon World Champion!! Helen took the women’s race in 2 hours, 1 minute and 37 seconds. She edged out Sara Haskins by just 3.7 seconds!!
