(May 29, 2007) Congratulations to Jared Rando and Amiel Cavalier! They went 1st and 3rd in Men’s Pro DH at Angel Fire NM over the Memorial Day weekend. The race was part of the NORBA National Gravity series, at the 19th Chile Challenge in the 2007 Mountain States Cup events. Jared won the DH event with a time of 4:45:33. Amiel’s time was 4:50:42. Coming is second was David Klaassenvanoorschot, of Riverside CA.
Here are Jared’s thoughts on his win:
“I feel like this has been a long time coming for me and I am really happy with the win. I've been so close to winning a NORBA so many times so it's almost like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders and it has really boosted my confidence and motivation.
As far as the race goes, it was fairly wet throughout practice and I was actually struggling a bit in the conditions. Amiel was riding really fast when it was wet and if it had stayed wet, I'm pretty sure he would have won.
The track at Angel Fire is long, rough and very physically demanding and the altitude makes it even harder. On race day it dried out but the weather still looked a little questionable. Amiel and I both caught riders in our qualifying runs, despite the 30 second gaps but we still managed to qualify first and third respectively.
The weather held out and for my race run I just stayed focused and made sure I hit everything consistently and pedaled really hard on all the long straights on the course. It was a great run for me and coming across the line I heard I was in the lead by 5 seconds with two riders to come down.
Cody Warren was next but unfortunately he flatted and wasn't able to come close to my time. Amiel was the last rider and came across the line in third place, about half a second slower than David K. I was stoked. I couldn't believe I had finally won a National DH race. It was something I have wanted to achieve for so long and I couldn't be any happier.”
Here’s what Amiel has to say about the event:
"The course in Angel Fire is at elevation--approximately 10,000 ft. So the air is thin and conditions changed a lot throughout the weekend; fortunately we raced in the dry. The course is very long with very technical long rock gardens with plenty of roots. Each technical section opened in to a flat-out open sprinting section. The course was awesome and the weekend went great for the team. My bikes worked great thanks to my mechanic Dusty (Nate Riffle). Not too many close calls in the DH but in the mountain X there was plenty of contact. I was fastest qualifier, so with a clean fast run I was aiming for the win, Jared rode great and it is great for the team as a whole. I am definitely happy with 3rd. I am going for a solid series finish.”
