Guy Pellerin, Territory Manager for Giant Canada, referees action between Finland and Sweden during the 2008 World Hockey Championships.
Canada’s Guy Pellerin chosen to referee world’s elite in Vancouver.
Giant Bicycles is honoured to have one of its own involved with the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games. Guy Pellerin, Giant Territory Manager for Atlantic Canada, will be one of the head referees throughout one of the most popular events, the Men’s Ice Hockey tournament.
The Olympic Games take place in Vancouver, British Columbia, from Friday February 12, 2010 through Sunday February 28, 2010. The Men’s Ice Hockey portion opens with Preliminary round-robin play on Tuesday February 16, 2010 and will showcase the best hockey players from around the globe in their 'Quest for the Gold.'
Guy started his officiating career at age 14 and turned pro at age 23. Since then, he’s worn the ‘zebra stripes’ in such leagues as the American Hockey League, the East Coast Hockey League and Central Hockey League. Now 38, Guy is a steadfast official throughout the regular season and playoffs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League but Guy is certainly no rookie when it comes to officiating elite-level International hockey. His list of credentials include the 2006 and 2009 World Junior Hockey Championships, the 2007 and 2008 World Hockey Championships and the 2008 Spengler Cup.
This is the first time however that Pellerin has officiated during the Olympic Winter Games. “I’m thrilled to be selected for the Olympics… especially with what hockey means to Canada and that fact that the games being hosted right here on Canadian soil. It’s an achievement I’m proud of, but it’s also testimony to the calibre of refereeing standards we have here in Canada.”
Even with all the demands that the sales world and refereeing command, Guy is still able to manage a happy home life as a husband to wife Caroline, and father to 3-year old son Joshua. “They’re my support crew,” says Guy, a native of Dieppe, New Brunswick, “they’re what help keeps things in perspective when life gets a little overwhelming.”
Unfortunately for all the Canadian hockey fans out there, there won’t be an opportunity for any calls in favour of Team Canada. In International and Olympic hockey, officials are not allowed to call games that involve the team from their home country.
Guy, from all your friends at Giant Bicycles we truly wish you nothing but fun and the best of success throughout the Olympic Games! We’re proud of you!
