German Andrei Greipel has given Team High Road their first ever victory in a ProTour race with a strong win in stage two of the Tour Down Under in Australia.
The 25-year-old German sprinter outshone two Australian riders, Graeme Brown and Allan Davis at the end of a fast and furious 148 kilometre stage between Stirling and Hahndorf. "It was a tough sprint, and I had no idea if it would finally work out when I started to power towards the line." Greipel said.
"But I've already won once here in Australia [in the Tour Down Under Classic on Sunday], and my motivation is very high. I think ultimately that is what made all the difference." Just like on Sunday, Greipel praised his team for "working so hard for me in the final kilometres, which is when it really matters." He is now lying third overall.
For the fourth-year pro, whose biggest previous win to date was a stage in the Tour of Denmark in 2005 Wednesday¹s win is by far the most important victory of his career. The victory also represents major progress in terms of results for High Road compared with 2007, when - with the team sponsored by T-Mobile - they did not take a ProTour win until April.
The Tour Down Under finishes next Sunday in Adelaide, Australia.
