PIT PASS: Carl Decker's Anthem X 29er

1 Ιουνίου 2011

Before this bike even hit the market, Carl Decker and the Giant Anthem X 29er had already cemented a winning partnership. In the spring of 2010, after several months of behind-the-scenes work helping Giant develop the company’s first-ever full-suspension 29er, Decker finally got his hands on a race-ready prototype at the Sea Otter Classic race in Monterey, California.

Sea Otter is a big event for Decker. The veteran XC racer focuses on major North American races, and Sea Otter is one of the biggest. When the new prototype showed up right before his race, he had a decision to make: race the bike he already knew like the back of his hand, or go with the new one—which wasn’t simply a new model but a completely different ride experience with its 29-inch wheels and geometry.

Decker took a few practice laps and thought it over. On the day of the Super D, he chose the 29er. On a fast, dusty, wide-open course with one long climb, he rode away from the field to take the win.

Decker and the Anthem X 29er have been together ever since. He went on to win a few more races with it last year, and this year he’s racing an all-new production frame with the same geometry, ALUXX SL aluminum tubing and 4 inches of rock-eating Maestro Suspension that was featured on the prototype.

Decker has adjusted his race goals for the 2011 season and is placing a bit more focus on endurance events like the Leadville Trail 100 in Colorado. He’s also keen on defending the All-Mountain World Championship title he won at the Downieville Classic last year with his Anthem X 29er.

After his 2010 successes on 29-inch wheels, Decker is splitting his time this year between the Anthem X 29er, for rugged XC courses, and the all-new XtC Composite 29er hardtail for certain short-track events.

One big change to Decker’s 2011 Anthem X 29er is SRAM componentry. Switching to the SRAM XX drivetrain, RockShox front and rear suspension, Avid brakes and Truvativ cockpit components has allowed for significant weight savings over last year’s race bike. Decker says his 2011 race bike is more than a pound lighter than last year’s. Other new components include DT Swiss hubs and rims, Schwalbe tires, Crank Bros pedals and a Fi’zi:k saddle.
