Craig and Compton earn national titles!

Giant’s
American off-road racers stormed the podium at the July 16-17 U.S. National Mountain Bike Championships in Sun Valley, Idaho. Over two days of racing, Rabobank-Giant riders Adam Craig and Katie Compton each earned a national championship, and riders from Rabobank-Giant and the Giant Factory Off-Road Team earned a combined total of six medals.

The two-day event began with cross-country racing on Saturday. Compton and Craig led the way for Giant, each taking home a bronze medal. Craig, whose form has been steadily improving throughout the season, rode his XtC Composite 29er to third place behind Todd Wells and Sam Schultz.

“It's good to be back in the top three,” Craig told Cyclingnews.com. “I started decent, but it was a race of attrition, of who could keep it together the most up that climb. I was close to Sam the whole race, but he had a good last two laps.”

Compton, riding her XtC Advanced SL, also finished third after a tight battle with eventual silver medalist Lea Davison. Compton looked to be headed for a second-place finish before she was slowed by a late-race flat tire. She got a quick wheel change in the pits and preserved her third-place finish.

Also representing Giant in XC competition were Factory Off-Road riders Kelli Emmett and Carl Decker. Emmett joined Compton on the podium with  a fifth-place performance, and Decker finished 17th in the pro men's race.

Day two of U.S. Nationals started off with a bang for Giant, as Craig and Decker roared to a one-two finish in the pro men’s Super D. Craig, riding his Trance X Advanced SL, clocked a time of 19:37 in the timed event, which features mostly downhill terrain mixed with some climbing. It was Craig’s sixth U.S. Championship in Super D racing.

Craig’s fellow Giant rider Decker gave him a run for his money, finishing less than 2 seconds back to earn the silver medal on his Anthem X 29er. Emmett, riding the Trance X Advanced SL, finished third in the women’s event, giving Giant three of the six Super D medals up for grabs.

Giant’s final medal came Sunday afternoon, when Compton defended her title on her XtC Advanced SL. Compton, a three-time medalist at Cyclocross World Championships, beat Heather Irmiger to earn her second straight U.S. Short-Track championship.
