Rabobank-Giant cyclocross rider Katie Compton battled the cold, wet conditions and difficult course at Round 5 of the World Cup series Sunday in Namur, Belgium, finishing on the podium behind winner Marianne Vos of The Netherlands and Lucie Chaniel-Lefevre of France.
Racing in light snowfall on a wet, partially frozen course, Compton, the current U.S. National Champion, got off to a tough start when she dropped her chain shortly after the start. She battled back on her Giant TCX Advanced SL, overcoming another setback when she crashed on the second lap. In the end, Compton finished third, moving up to second place overall in the World Cup standings.
In men’s racing on Sunday, Rabobank-Giant riders Bart Aernouts and Gerben de Knegt finished 9th and 11th respectively. Aernouts had the legs to battle for the podium but the Belgian was slowed by three flat tires on the day. His finish dropped him to seventh place overall in the World Cup.
Aernouts and de Knegt were joined Sunday by Rabobank road pro Lars Boom, the former Cyclocross World Champion and 10-time Dutch champion. Boom, who is focusing on off-season road preparations, made a rare ’cross appearance, racing in the mud just for fun. He fought his way up to 12th place before fading back to finish 28th.
In other weekend ’cross racing, Rabo-Giant’s Under-23 World Champion Lars van der Haar finished third at Sunday’s GVA Trofee race in Essen, Belgium. Van der Haar remains atop the standings in that series after four rounds.
